staying in the city

I didn't end up going to Syria this weekend because my friend Jared, who I was planning on travelling with, was going to take the foreign service exam. Only later did he realize that he'd comprimised himself already in the background check for long and complicated reasons. So instead I spent the weekend flitting about in the city. A good time and little sleep was definitely had. On sunday I went to the National Museum (the only museum, Beirut is a city of ONE park and ONE museum), which was very cool. I bought a comic history of Lebanon in french in the gift store, which I consider to be an amazing find.

The Armenian Genocide remembrance events are going on here. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go learn about one of the biggest unrecognized genocides in history. While the holocaust was immense, there were atrocities that preceeded it that don't get the attention they deserve.

Tonight I'm going to a lecture on lesbianism in the Arab world. It sounds fascinating. I'm leaving for Jordan on Thursday. I still need to come up with research for about five hundred papers or so, but whatever. Who actually DOES work anyway?

I really get the impression that you do nothing but travel and discuss the talk of the town whilst sipping coffee and fine wine in picturesque locations. Preferably in a white suit. I'd be really disappointed to hear about you, say, writing a paper.

I think I heard the Taliban* punished lesbians by knocking walls over on them. I did read a translation of this extremely weird treatise/story collection in Arabic which included a section on lesbianism. There was an odd mix of "all women are secretly lesbian" anxiety, "women only become lesbians when they can't find men," and "mysterious sins no woman should ever, ever try but which we are nevertheless turned on by!" stuff. So I'm interested to find out what you learn.

*In the Arabic I learned, "taliban" should mean "two students" or possibly "studently."
